Welcome to the Wonderful World of Sula!

Welcome to our blog about Sula! In our class, 20th Century Women’s Voices, we have been studying the different roles of women in A Room of One’s Own, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Bell Jar and Sula. The major theme in A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf is that a woman needs both money and private space is she if to write decent fiction. Virginia Woolf was an advocate for women’s rights, which was strongly reflected, in her writing. The next work we studied was The Handmaid’s Tale, which focused on restriction of women in society along with free will and choice. The Bell Jar centered on the stereotypical roles women felt they had to fit themselves into and the consequences when those roles are discarded. We are now entering the world of Toni Morrison’s Sula and are anticipating the way these various themes affect this latest book.
